Credentials

If you select Juku and Joy Prep to provide test prep for your child, I (Melissa) will personally be your child’s test prep teacher.  Other companies may employ grad students to help manage client load, but I keep my client base small enough that every student has the opportunity to learn from a certified, highly trained teacher: ME!

I hold state teaching certification in the areas of English (6-12), Elementary Education, Gifted, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). I also hold ACT educator certification in the areas of Math, Science, Reading, English, Writing, and Basics.

You may be wondering what ACT educator certification even means! Well, do you see the badges at the bottom of this page? I earned those badges by qualifying with certain scores on each section of the ACT, attending 75 hours of training, and passing certification exams for each of the content areas.

Over the years of my career, I have taught in both private and public school settings (grades 1-10), and I have worked as a college and career advisor and a technical editor for a government contractor. I also have experience with adult education: helping adults who are learning English, and teaching ACT certified educator courses.

When you hire me, you are hiring a private teacher for your child– think of me as a ‘timeshare teacher.’ Though my sessions are informed by industry-best practices that I have learned through training, I never use a canned curriculum. The lessons that I provide are customized for each and every student.

Teaching is my passion! The opportunity to provide individualized instruction through Juku and Joy Prep has been the most rewarding teaching experience yet. I hope to continue to serve students by helping to prepare them for college applications through individualized test prep.
